Unfortunately, sometimes (and especially in London), if you DO offer your seat to someone who looks like they need it more than you, you'll get shrieked at by said person and accused of being patronising and suchlike. It's the sort of thing which leads to future 'rudeness'.
I agree with you, I offer my seat up to people who look like they need it more... I also hold doors open for people, help people negotiate stairs with pushchairs and ask crying strangers if theyre ok. Looks like I'm doomed if I ever go to London or anwhere similar :(
I've had some men say that they feel a little nervous holding doors open and standing up these days - because some women get all shrieky (as noted). I personally still find it polite and charming. Sometimes I think political correctness has gone far too far.
I hold doors open for anyone who's walking towards the door, and thank anyone who holds a door for me. I think taking offence at that sort of common courtesy is stupid and rude. I've never seen it as something men should do for women though, but as something people should do for other people, regardless of gender.
