“Sometimes I've believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.” - Lewis Carrol

Angell sighed heavily as she leaned back in the chair, crossing her arms in front of her chest as she watched the guy across the table. “So what’s it going to be, Larry? We gonna talk or what?”

The man across the table shifted in front of her, looking supremely uncomfortable. Angell just raised an eyebrow, wondering what exactly it was he was hiding from her. She knew he wasn’t the guy. Frankly, he didn’t have the stones to be the guy, she knew it and he knew it. But his behavior was definitely fishy enough to look into, so until she got to the bottom of what exactly he was hiding, he wasn’t going anywhere. He shifted in front of her again, before looking up and giving her a wide-eyed look.

“You’d never believe me.”

“I can believe a lot of things, Larry,” she said slowly, giving him a sympathetic look. And she could. Living in a city like this, you learned to believe almost everything. “But I can’t believe something if I don’t hear it first.”

Larry shifted again, scratching the top of his balding head lightly, and then looked up at her again. “I was having-” His voice dropped off into a mumble that Angell couldn’t here, and she leaned closer-not to mock him, just to try and get a better read on what he was saying, and he rolled his eyes dramatically, taking her movements the wrong way. “I was having a mammogram, okay?”

Angell bolted back in her chair, eyes wide in confusion as she bit her lip slightly. “Oh-I didn’t realize-”

“Look, women are the only ones these days who have to be worried about breast health,” Larry replied, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “It’s just as likely for a man to be diagnosed with breast cancer as it is a woman.”

“I see,” Angell nodded. She knew she should just get the name of his doctor to verify the appointment, but she couldn’t help herself. Her curiosity got the better of her, and she tilted her head to the side slightly. “But how do you-”

“For a man of my girth, it’s quite easy,” he said, keeping his eyes on the table in front of him as he spoke. “Now do you have any other inquiries about my deeply personal health issues detective, or may I go be embarrassed in peace?”

She took the notepad in front of her, and spun it around so that it was facing him, placing a pen down on top of it. “Name and number of your doctor so we can confirm the appointment.”

Larry did as he requested, before pushing the pad back towards her. “May I go now?”

“Yes, of course,” she nodded, scratching the back of her neck, still slightly overwhelmed by the turn of events. “You have a good day.”

“I’ll do that,” Larry growled before finally disappearing out the door.

Once he was gone, Angell got up slowly and started to gather her things together. “Well. That was-awkward.”
