I must dig out my mother-in-law's photos from communist-era Czechoslovakia. The civil defence and pioneer uniforms look quite exotic now.

I know what you mean! We have lots of old photos and books and there's always someone good for a story around - it's unimaginable nowadays, but it *was* true...
My grandparents lived for a while in Czechoslovakia / Czech Republic, right around the time of the splitting. We still have some schoolbooks from that time!
