After not posting here in eons, I suppose I should post any number of big updates, but I'll start with the main thing going on right now.
No, I didn't buy a house. I have been way too fiscally irresponsible for that to be a reality any time soon, but I am renting a whole house! I am psyched. I have been in the same apartment for almost 16 years, and I have outgrown it. There is a fine line between pack rat and hoarder, and I am due for a lifestyle change. Even if I weren't a pack rat, 16 years worth of stuff is a lot. I have been packing for weeks and I still feel like I am just getting started.
Specific arrangements are still way up in the air. My soon-to-be-former landlords are being a huge pain in the ass. My lease ended last month. Most of the time I've lived there I haven't even had a lease, but a year ago they wanted to hike the rent, so I got one again. In any event, I am currently without a lease, and even though I would be willing to pay rent in both places through July to make the transition easier, they want me out ASAP. So much so that they have filed for eviction!!!
It's my own fault really. I wrote off the second bedroom years ago (it has been known as "the scary room") and have simply used it as a place to throw crap to keep the rest of the place livable. When I ran out of room there, the garage was next (it's larger and just as scary). I have never been a neat freak, but I kept the rest of the place relatively habitable. The guy who owns the property has known about it for ages and never made an issue of it. I think the problem is that his wife discovered it, and now he is acting like he was never aware of it either and is desperate to have me out. I don't really think clutter is a lease violation, but now that my lease is up, they are perfectly free not to renew it.
I wrote them a very nice letter taking full responsibility and apologizing and pleading to let me stay, but it did no good, despite the fact that I have lived there for almost 16 years and paid over $100K in rent. So, I went on craigslist, and to my surprise, I found exactly what I was looking for almost immediately. It's a 3-bedroom house on the same side of town where I already live. It's got an attached garage and a huge unfinished basement, so now I'll have plenty of storage space without having to clutter up my actual living space. I am trying to get organized and purge a lot of crap I don't need, but I don't have the time I need to do it right, so a lot of it will have to wait until after the move.
The logistics are going to be a pain, but I am really getting excited about the lifestyle upgrade. The rent is higher, and I'll have more responsibilities (like mowing the lawn and shoveling the walk), but the more I think about it, the more I am excited to have a whole house to myself. Hopefully this will be the opportunity I need to make some lifestyle changes and maintain a healthier environment in the future.
