parking during the year

Hey guys, quick question from in an incoming freshman here (IncoFro?) about parking. I live in Alameda, about a 40-minute drive away from campus, and I plan to return home at least once every other weekend. Are the on-campus parking fees so astronomical that this wouldn't be worth it and I should just take buses/trains instead? What about ( Read more... )

The fee is $170 for the academic year (Sept-June) for a car, which is not astronomical, but as the above poster said, as a freshman you're not allowed a car on campus.

No idea about motorcycles.

Freshman are allowed to have cars, but you have to apply for a waiver in order to get special permission to have a permit. I knew a girl who got a waiver because she had ballet off-campus twice a week and needed a car, so if you have a legit reason you should check into that.

Oh yeah, that works out. I need to come back for martial arts lessons. The distance (close enough to come back, far enough to not have to come back every few days) is what makes Stanford so perfect for me.

Plus I hate Berkeley.

Thanks a lot.

Although freshmen are "not allowed" to have cars, I knew a whole bunch that did, so I can't imagine it is that difficult to get a parking permit.

Yea. Buy a permit off an upperclassman [since you're from relatively close, you probably already know some? since it sounds like your only reason for having a car is going home, which won't be justification for "special permission"], and as long as you don't do anything retarded like flaunt the gaps in the system to Bravman or something, you'll be fine.
