Housing

A friend of mine just got accepted to Stanford for grad school and is currently apartment hunting. He's not finding Craigslist to be very helpful. Does anyone have any tips for non-Craigslist ways of finding good housing in the area?

Well, 2 friends of mine (one a recent Stanford grad) are looking for housing in the Palo Alto area and having a 3rd roommate would really help (3br is less pricy than 2, usually)... so if your friend wants their info, feel free to lj-message me

leverage facebook friends' stanford contacts and maybe facebook marketplace. is the grad housing there not an option?

my impression was that grad housing is a bad option, like it is at most schools.

i disgree--while there are undesirable locations on campus, there are also some pretty nice places. this all depends on personal preferences however. your friend should investigate grad housing options or state personal preferences here for feedback.

If they're in the area, your friend could also go to the walk-in assignments (which begin tomorrow: http://studenthousing.stanford.edu/). Being a first year grad student may give them a slightly higher level of priority.

Also, to second this comment, the grad housing is pretty decent. Plus, being on campus is pretty much always going to be better for classes/research; getting to/from campus on a daily basis otherwise can be a pain.

This may be sort of old-school but Stanford does have a pretty extensive network of Usenet groups, including searching for housing.
