I thought I'd offer my most relevant advice in the name of pursuing the most economical faux-coffee beverage.

Keep on enjoying those pink skies, and if you're in Seminar House 3 (which you appear to be) I implore you to find time to assault Okaasan's taste.

Ohhhh haha. Hi Mike. Thank you for the advice. Do you happen to also know the most worthwhile (if any) brand of cheese? Most of it that I've tried seems to be mostly tasteless, and I don't feel like throwing away money comparison shopping...

And I am indeed in Seminar House 3 (you former Japan folks' suggestion), and Okaasan, about whom I had heard the horror stories, is apparently trying to change her rep by being creepily nice this term. And it's creepy. Yeah...

So assault her taste? How do you mean? Like, force her to drink sub-par cafe au lait, or insult her decorating style?
