Advocating “one side of a social, political, or cultural issue that is a matter of partisan controversy.”

Well that pretty much rules out the teaching of anything much hairier than the two times table.

Would one be able to teach evolution under these rules?

it makes me really sad that evolution is still part of a controversy, but i suppose if you taught creationism too and didn't mention that one is scientifically valid while the other is a crock of shit, you'd be ok.

someone else made the good point that this would shut the law school down completely, as most of their teaching is done by studying controversial cases, and cases have a winning side and a losing side, so pretty much the entire curriculum advocates one side in "issues that are a matter of partisan controversy".

I think it would pretty much shut down *any* school. I mean, there's controversy about global warming, about different economic theories, about how the dinosaurs went extinct. Everthing's controversial. Does this mean you can't teach comparative religion if you're Christian (or Muslim, or atheist)? How about teaching an ethics class? Are you not allowed to take a stand about what is ethical, for fear that it might be controversial? If you teach women's studies are you not allowed to say you're a feminist?

This is utterly ludicrous. Thank you for bringing it to my attention, though.

oh, i know. i just love that it's obviously intended to target certain subjects (women studies, liberal arts in general) but it clearly would affect all subject matters in ways that the sponsors of the bill probably don't want and haven't even considered.

it'll never pass, i'm sure, but just the fact that it made it to committee is kind of ridiculous and sad.

this is so ridiculous/un-enforce-able/over the top that i doubt it has a chance of ever 'passing' etcetera. but it gives state senate majority leader PAMPHLETS (/ insidehighered.com / four_thorns!!!!) something to talk about?

state legislatures are full of morons and sometimes they actually ACCOMPLISH things, god, let's just hold each other.
