“Where’s Naruto?”
Sasuke only shrugged and continued to cut the vegetables Sakura had given him. “Probably still outside with Kiba and Ino.” He stopped chopping and looked up. “Why?”
Sakura glanced out the window. “It’s getting dark,” she explained worriedly, “and the storm seems to be getting worse. What if they get stuck?”
He snorted. “Then we can finally get some sleep tonight.”
“Sasuke!” Sakura muttered. “Those are our friends out there.” Sure, they irritated her as well with their loud searches for beer at four in the morning, but that an expectation when they planned this trip in the first place.
Sakura continued to watch the growing storm. The wind was blowing so swiftly she could hear it from inside and the bushy trees were barely visible under the cover of all that snow. If her friends were still by the hills skiing-
“They’ll be fine,” Sasuke said, interrupting her thoughts. He pushed her to the side and began stirring the soup she’d been neglecting. “Kiba texted me twenty minutes ago and said they were on their way back. They probably just got held up by the storm.”
Sakura hit him with a towel. “Well why didn’t you say that earlier?!” When he smirked, she growled and hit him a second time. “You can be so annoying sometimes, Sasuke.”
“I try.”
She didn’t reply though. Rather, her eyes stayed glued to the raging blizzard just outside. Sasuke worried for a moment about the roads and how their friends were faring on them, but quickly pushed the thought aside. Naruto always found his way out of bad situations. Everything would be fine. Sakura didn’t seem to share his optimism, however.
Rolling his eyes, Sasuke put his hand over hers and sighed. “They’ll be fine,” he muttered. Judging by the flush on his cheeks, he wasn’t particularly comfortable with making her feel better.
“I hope so,” Sakura said, turning her hand over to twine her fingers through his.
She’d had such a bad feeling when the five of them had pulled up to the cabin in the mountains. Sasuke had teased her at first when she pointed out her uneasiness, but he seemed to be taking her seriously now. Something just didn’t feel right and although nothing bad had happened since they arrived, Sakura just couldn’t shake the feeling that something was going to go terribly, terribly wrong. Unable to help herself, she leaned forward and pulled Sasuke into an embrace. He stiffened at first but resigned himself to being her source of comfort.
“We’re safe here,” Sasuke murmured, rubbing circles into her back. “I promise.”
The cabin promptly blacked out.
