Okay, first of all: Ianto was not that hilariously wry last season, was he? I think I would have remembered that. But in 2.02, with all of the "Because I know everything. It says so at the bottom of the screen" and whatnot, I totally wanted to have his babies.
No. I mean, he had his moments, but this is clearly Ianto v.2, Hilariously Bitchy Ianto. Sex with Jack seems to be very, very good for him. Very good. And yeah, his relationship with Gwen is really sweet.
Very much with you on this. Rachael and I were both horrendously disappointed with Season 1, but we're having a lot of fun this time round, especially for the reasons you name.
And yeah, Ianto is made of win, especially in Season One. I think the writers went, "Did we bother to give him a character last year? We should do that." And someone else went, "There was that one time. With the stopwatch." And they went, "Oh, right!" And made Ianto like that.
The John Hart Time Agent thing...I assumed he was a Time Agent, but I thought Jack had only lost 2 years worth of his memories, not necessarily his whole time with the group. I'd have to watch Empty Child again to check.
Right, right - Jack only lost part of his memories, but I can't see him hooking up with another Time Agent he knew before and not asking, "So, you know those last two years I was with the Agency? What the hell happened?" I very much got the impression that when he woke up one day and realized that he didn't remember the last two years, that was the beginning of the end for him and the Time Agency.
As nestra pointed out in one of her TW posts, Ianto was pretty traumatized for most of last year. Canary Wharf angst, Lisa angst, post-Lisa angst, etc.
I think I just envisioned the Time Agency as a more loose-knit and far-flung organization. Missions going on all over the place, and I theorized Jack's stolen memories would be relating to a specific mission somewhere/when. When Jack and John worked together it was briefly (except not, thanks to the trap), and John wasn't around any time close to before or after Jack's memory gap...does that make sense?
True, Ianto was a bit of a mess. I'll still cry foul on the writers, though. Giving Ianto his first real spotlight in the atrocious 'Cyberwoman', where he endangers the team, the city, and possibly the world through flagrant stupidity? Not a good strategy. I spent the rest of the season wondering why the heck he still had a job. Of course, now I know it's because He Knows Everything. But they failed to mention that in Season One. :?P
