I really, really liked this, especially the opening paragraph. I know you accomplished everything you intended, but I wish the story was longer simply because I enjoyed reading it.

He himself never wished death on any living creature, it would come soon enough, but he had begun to find his thoughts longing for an equalizer. Fire and water, life destroyed so that it could spring anew.
I really liked the viewpoint here, of Death wearied by his job when the carnage has become senseless and extreme.

In the end there are simply too many souls, and it seems that it may only be "over" when both sides have been destroyed. What, then, has been won?
