I've read this over a few times for a few reasons. One, poetry often escapes me, and even though I like this and can see the beauty to it, it took me a few reads to see why. Two, I feel like I can learn something from you when I read your entries.
I read the comments and can see the aging metaphor, but I don't really think that's what you've written about. What I get out of this is that there is an acceptance of sorts, of the adversity of life, of carrying the weight on your back, because you don't know anything different, until the needle pricks and makes you aware. Then you can mend and sail through waters as yourself regardless of whether they are calm or turbulent. This can come with age and often does, but I don't think age is always the contributing factor.
Please correct my interpretation if I'm way off base. As I said, I think I learn something every time I read your posts.
The beauty of poetry is in the layers and the ways that it can mean both/and. You honor me and yourself by giving it the space in your mind and heart and soul to unfold.
I wrote it because I wanted to explore the back that needs be or must be bent to do its work, that sometimes life sends you troubles so that you can be better ready to help others with their own. I wrote it because someone that I love has done their own struggling and stitching and breathing but can still use a little help from a friend. I wrote it because I'm getting old and fat and grey and I'm OK with that because it means I'm better able to help.
So both/and. Thank you: for sharing, for reading, for asking, and, most importantly, for stopping in this crazy world to read and to think.
