The unfortunate thing about getting into a fandom with people in it is that I have been COMPLETELY REMISS in my Big Brother spoiler-sharing duties.
So the rumor is that there will be four mentors this season, past successful houseguests who will be there playing for money and honor. Each veteran player will "claim" HGs for themselves, and the one whose mentee wins gets $100,000. (Which is more than second place gets, so I feel like this part of the rumor is probably bogus.) Also according to the rumor, each of them gets $20,000 for playing and an additional $2,000 per week.
(Also, Janelle has a six-month-old and Dan got married last year, so I'm not really sure why they'd do this, but... let's go with it, whatever.)
Supposedly the four will be Mike Boogie (BB2, BB7), Danielle (BB3, BB7), Janelle (BB6, BB7), and Dan (BB10). They're being poised respectively as villain (m), villain (f), hero (f), and hero (m). I'm not sure I buy into any of that, for reasons that I've rambled about in depth already, most notably during Survivor Heroes vs Villains, mostly centering around the idea that it's seriously fucked up to identify real people as "good guys" and "bad guys" when they're all actual human beings with complex motives playing a game for money that would really help them in their day-to-day lives. But importantly to me, even tough some of them are "heroes" and others "villains," they're all gamers, and I'm looking forward to seeing strategy.
...3/4 strategy, at least. I love Janie, but she's not really a strategic mastermind. I don't care, though, if she's drunk on the feeds, because that is entertainment technology 1000%.
Boogie is the opposite; I think he's actually pretty smart strategically, and was helping Will in s7 more frequently than we like to admit, but he's a pretty shit person and I don't really want to see him being a misogynistic douchebag anymore. I'd like to think that in the six years since BB7 he's outgrown that, but I basically feel like once you have your bro laser your genital warts off on TV that ship has sailed. Forever. That said, he and Will provided the best gossip the BB feeds have ever had; I definitely wouldn't be disappointed to hear more of that. And- IDK if you guys know this- he owns some popular clubs in California. TRUE STORY. I KNOW HE'S BEEN REALLY SUBTLE ABOUT IT.
(Boogie possibly on BB14 = reason Will got a twitter? I could definitely see it. No one's better than Chill Town at publicity. Although it might just be wanting to publicly brag about being BFFs with NPH- which, honestly, I couldn't blame him for.)
Danielle is the whole package. Best player to never win (and I say that even though she isn't my beloved BB Dani), she's strategic, she isn't bad at comps, her social game is strong to quite strong, and she's a lot of fun to watch on the feeds.
Dan is a BB fanboy, and while I will miss his relationships with Memphis and Renny and &Keesha;, he's basically just a goofy good dude who gave some great feeds.
And then, supposedly, there will be 16 HGs. I can't decide how I feel about this, because IDK if you know this, but that is a LOT of people to keep track of. On Survivor, I don't even bother learning their names til merge or so. Live feeds don't have the chyrons on screen. This is why, all other reasoning aside, it is really a problem that they don't cast diversely enough. I still can't identify some of the bland white guys from previous seasons. Maybe they'll have to wear bracelets that identify their mentors or something? That would be helpful.
You know what's super-weird? I'm spoiled on the cast for Survivors 25 and 26 (and, in fact, I know the f3 on the latter), but this is all the information I've been able to dig up on BB14. I mean, it's not ACTUALLY weird; the concept of "spoilers" for Big Brother is a fallacy, given that the interesting part of the show is live. But sometimes I'm like "Yeah, I know what will be revealed in mid-May of 2013, but no idea who will show up in two weeks." It's kind of trippy. But then, that's what makes it work.
I got into a discussion on twitter the other day about how BB on its own, minus the feeds, isn't actually an interesting show. Because it's really not. I feel like maybe I haven't discussed that enough here, when I'm just evangelizing over how much I love it. The show can be compulsively watchable- it IS compulsively watchable, I think- but it's the feeds (whether you're watching them or reading recaps or what) that makes it interesting. Big Brother, the experience, involves watching the reality TV sausage get made, and it is WAY more interesting than people give it credit for.
So I know that once the show starts, it will be exciting me in a way that it just isn't yet. I have my normal pre-season apathy right now. But cast reveal is on July 2, and that's when I'll get excited, because that's when my random judging starts, and then the show starts ten days later and it becomes the constructed-reality-vs-manipulated-reality dichotomy that fascinates me. Right now I'm like "Yeah, whatever, it's coming back soonish. Can has Avengers?"
Speaking of which, today I bought a giant Black Widow wall decal. It's not a Jeff Probst standee, but I think it expresses my soul just as neatly.
WAIT NEWLY RELEASED SPOILERS:
Okay, missyae (aka the dude who got Russell to spoil all three of his seasons of Survivor) has been releasing one mentor a day and claims that the fourth mentor isn't Danielle, it's RACHEL REILLY.
Cannot. Even. Deal.
EVEN RUSSELL WAS ONLY ON TWO CONSECUTIVE SEASONS.
