Last night I went to the comic store, as has apparently become my Friday tradition.Yesterday was an awesome day at the comic store, because not only did I get a ton of $.50 comics, but they had the first issue of the one Black Widow mini that isn't in TPB (the Greg Rucka Pale Little Spider arc, ftr) in the $.50 bin, so that was definitely $10 well- ( Read more... )

I had a lot of the same feelings! Like, the movie ended and I kind of looked at littledust and metonymy and we all agreed that there were parts that were problematic and vaguely sketchy, but the parts that were good were SO FRIGGING GOOD that they made up for the rest of it. To me, parts of it (the puke parts specifically) read like someone wrote a script for the movie and a company looked at it and said, "Well, it's GOOD but it could be FUNNIER" and stuck in a bunch of more mainstreamy jokes? idk ( ... )

IAWTMFC to all of it. And really, if those adding those mainstream-y jokes is necessary to bring it to screens for me, I AM KIND OF OKAY WITH THAT.

Especially because I appreciated a movie that KNEW its kids weren't popular by non-a capella standards, but RAN with that shit.

I liked Beca's dude too! Mostly because he's a GIANT DORK OBSESSED WITH HUGHES MOVIES <3 but I totally don't remember his name either. Also, I figured Beca would end up with the dude, because movie, but I kind of thought that by the end Chloe would hook up with Crystal Rose for ~curiosity's sake~ or whatever. Well, her or Stacie; Stacie just seemed to like orgasms, which hey, GOOD FOR EVERYONE ( ... )

I agree with that! I was frustrated by her portrayal, but at the same time, it's better than so many other fat characters in similar movies- or, even worse, similar movies that don't have any other characters above "normal" weight.

For that matter, I love that none of the other characters were judged for their weight at all, no matter where they were on the spectrum, even though some of them clearly weren't thin.

I WANT TO DO NOTHING BUT WATCH THAT RIFF OFF ALL DAY.

OH WAIT, NO, THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I DID YESTERDAY.

I approve of all your icons in this discussion.

ALSO. PP!!! Yes, Brittney Snow seemed canon bi, at the least? The first half of the movie was more extreme, the way she was tactile with Beca when they were having that first mixer? Anyways. Aside from the fat joke stuff, and some of the gay jokes that seemed played as 'ooh, look, a lesbian! Hahaha!) IT WAS AMAZINGNESS THROUGH AND THROUGH.

Also: misdirection. The moment we saw the hot radio host dude, I was so certain he'd put the moves on Beca during a latenight session, and she'd let him for a moment -- and dorky guy would see! -- but then she'd push him away and have to explain herself etc etc blah blah, but it did not happen, for which I was glad.

I can't wait to go again on Tuesday. I am evangelical about this movie in a way I haven't been since WHIP IT!

While watching the film, I could have sworn that it was an intentional running gag that Chloe was just as queer as the suspected lesbian. I recall one scene where the both of them were ogling one of the other girls, and she also had an obvious crush on Beca. There were some other little things I'm forgetting -- I'll have to rewatch. I'm hoping they discuss this in the DVD commentary!

I really loved this movie. I didn't feel like the fat jokes were at "Fat Amy's" expense -- she made a lot of them herself in a matter-of-fact way. She didn't seem bothered at all about her weight, she attracted lots of boys, and she was probably the most confident and honest character in the entire film. I know she's most people's favorite.

This reminded me of the "new classic" teen films of the early 2000s; it just had that vibe. I loved it.
