End of an era

Tonight I had my last yoga class with the teacher I've been studying with for the last six (? seven?) years. She's giving up all her evening classes to spend more time with her family - baby boy of 16 mos and hubby. I managed not to cry as I handed her a card and got my last hug, but really I'm totally gutted.

When I threw a little hissy fit on ( Read more... )

I think this is the universe gently nudging you to try that Iyengar class we talked about...but then, you know I'm biased. Losing a great teacher is tough, but speaking as someone who does it a lot, it can be great for your practice. What one teacher sees every day becomes invisible to them...the need for pratyahara flows both ways. Every time I find a new teacher, my practice blossoms in new ways.

Yes, I can definitely see how moving on from a teacher can be a good thing, but I'm still going to miss her madly.

Point taken about the Iyengar class. I think part of why I haven't to date is that I get to Thursdays (when the class is) and really all I want is the comfort of my normal practice. I spend so much of work in my head that I don't want to *think* so hard. Not a good excuse I recognise. Would probably be easier if I had a buddy to give me a kick in the butt.

I know a bit of what you feel; my old teacher moved to Bath and I was gutted. Tried a new class/teacher and it wasn't right at all. Luckily she ended up moving back for family reasons and I got to take a few more classes with her which were really beneficial before I left the UK. Your practice may move in a different direction now, but you'll carry with you what you learned from her. And who's to say you can't treat yourself to a class with her every now and again if you take a day off work?
