sym·pa·thy ( P ) Pronunciation Key (smp-th) n. pl. sym·pa·thies
A relationship or an affinity between people or things in which whatever affects one correspondingly affects the other. Mutual understanding or affection arising from this relationship or affinity.
The act or power of sharing the feelings of another.
Pity and sympathy are totally different things. Sympathy is understanding what the other person is feeling and supporting. It's more of a nice thing, really. Some people might not want sympathy, true, because they're embarassed or mix it up with pity. There's a fine line between the two.
Essentially, sympathy is a nice thing, and it doesn't prove that the receiver isn't strong; rather, that he/she is open to developing a bond with the giver :3
