My thought on reading this is what happened to academic freedom? The University put him on leave stifles that freedom. But then perhaps that action is nuanced too.
Placing a teacher on leave is almost automatic anytime a teacher comes under fire for some thing or another. I read it as "the university responded according to standard protocol". Guth's collegues are protesting the university's action. Considering that what he tweeted does qualify as protected speech I'd be very surprised if he is not back in the classroom by 2nd semester or earlier.
