I wouldn't call them stinking, but they are...pedestrian. And a highly belated attempt to cash in on the Magic Boarding School fad, and too much "hey, non-Heralds are cool too, really!" Which I agree with in theory, but Lackey, like Bishop, should totally stick to the wish-fulfillment IMO. (I am getting my Dubious Books fix quite easily these days, thanks to my Nook, Barnes&Noble's "read anything in our catalog free for an hour!" policy and my daughter's adoration of the kids' section at the local bookstore.)

Also, I used to be a non-ironic fan of Laurell K. Hamilton and therefore have very, very high standards for unreadability. That is all.

Home From The Seas was definitely pedestrian. Rarely for a new Lackey book am I able to put it down halfway through, and go off and do something else instead. Possibly because I wasn't too fond of the new character, and the old returning ones didn't seem as interesting as I'd remembered them.

But then, I enjoyed the new Valdemar college ones....
