Aristotle defined "greatness" in the sense of ethical greatness to be that of one who is virtuous. If I recall, Alexander got his namesake for Great from being the ideal military leader. Aristotle did not define "great" in a person from his or her actions but how their actions reflected on their percieved goals. So perhaps Alexander was "Great" if he had ever aspired to conquering the known, as he certainly made great head-way into the endeavor.
