so I run to you

Well so I guess it's time for an update of some sort. I would like to post something other than the "here's what I've been doing lately" kind of post. However, my brain is not up to the task of anything deeper at the moment. So you'll have to be content with just that ( Read more... )

I've been trying to get into Wilco recently. I'm finding more success than with U2, who no matter how hard I try, I can't seem to like very much.

I definitely back you up completely on that description of Orlando. My buddy Bone goes to school at UCF, and I think the same things when I go to visit. I don't think I could take all the gee dee tolls all the time either.

Amen on O-town... although if you're there for good enough reason, it's totally worthwhile. I LOVED living there this summer, but not because of O-town itself... 'cause Orlando is extremely overrated.

Wilco just played here this week, also. Not that I went... I didn't.

I prefer U2 to Wilco myself... but I just checked "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" out of the library yesterday, and I think it's EXTREMELY overrated.

I dont know that HTDAAB is "EXTREMELY" overrated. First, I just dont listen to all the hype and reviews that much. But I have had discussion about this with a number of friends. The fact is if people are expecting them to replicate or outdo The Joshua Tree then they are mistaken. For far too many reasons it just wont ever happen. But if you hold HTDAAB up to the rest of the U2 catalogue it definitely shines.

Is it their most groundbreaking creative work ever? No. I'll definitely agree there is alot of the typical U2 sound on this album. But at the end of the day it's still great pop/rock songcraft. I think some people have become so familiar with the U2 sound that they forget the raw talent of the band. I was in that boat upon first listens of HTDAAB. I had to remember though...how many bands have been around this long and are in their mid to late 40's releasing such solid material? After more time with the album and just listening without any unrealistic expectations I finally began enjoying it for what it was -- fun

See, here's the thing. I'm not arguing that it's a bad album (I don't think that's the case, though I've only listened to it through once at this point). I just don't think it's as amazing as a lot of critics (and a lot of my friends) have made it out to be. They ARE saying it's the next best thing to Joshua Tree... and maybe it is, I am not that familiar with U2's catalouge. *I* am just saying it's not THAT amazing. I think it's FUN--I LOVE "Vertigo" for that reason. (Who can resist rolling down the windows, driving fast and dancing like a maniac when that song comes on? It's dangerous!) I just don't think it's earth shattering, either.
