Fic: that's what counts (baby!Panic)

Nov 19, 2008 10:05

I'm kind of more than a little giddy that so many of you enjoyed baby!Panic, even if it IS basically my puppy!fic, only with, you know, boys. You all are so good at putting up with my self-indulgences, LOL.

Speaking of baby!Panic, today is emilyray's birthday, I believe, and I promised her a fic-ish sort of thing. So Happy Birthday, Em! I think you're pretty damn neat. ♥

that's what counts
baby!Panic, wee little Jon/Brendon | 526 words | G

Greta's read the email forward about kids' definitions of love, and because she's a huge sap, she decides to try it on her own kids. On the afternoon before Valentine's Day, while the kids are having Oreos with pink icing and chocolate milk, she asks them, "Do you all know what love is?"

All the kids nod. Spencer rolls his eyes and nods the most.

Greta smiles. "What is it?"

"Love is when you hold hands and make faces," Spencer replies without looking up from his cookie. He licks the icing off and shrugs.

"Ooooor, when you kiss," Brendon says emphatically, eyes wide and happy. "You always kiss when you're in love."

Beside him at the table, Jon scrinches his mouth up and frowns. "I thought you hugged when you're in love," he says softly, and he sounds hurt for some reason. Greta knows she shouldn't laugh at that, but it's too adorable not to, especially when Brendon throws his arms around Jon and tackles him to the carpet.

"You do, Jon, you do!"

Jon looks incredibly relieved, and meanwhile Spencer watches them with mild fascination as he twists Ryan's Oreos apart; for whatever reason, Ryan doesn't like to do it himself.

Greta writes all their responses down, and doesn't really think about kissing or hugs or love until later on, when she's helping the boys into their coats so they can wait outside on the sidewalk for their parents.

As usual, Spencer's mother is first to pick him up, and before Spencer hops into the mini van, he grabs Jon and hugs him tight, then kisses Brendon and Ryan on the cheek. Jon's face falls so hard, Greta swears it thuds on the ground, and he doesn't wave when the van drives off.

But Brendon puts his arm around Jon and whispers, "That's okay, he still loves you, and I do, too." Then he puts both hands on Jon's cheeks and kisses him with big, puckered lips, loud and smacking, like a cartoon kiss. He drops his hands, and Jon blinks at him for a moment before a bright, toothy grin spreads over his face.

Ryan just stands there grinning, and he reaches out to take Jon's hand. His fingers are still slightly sticky from the cookies.

"See? Everyone loves you," Brendon says with a decisive nod, and Jon smacks an equally loud kiss on Brendon's cheek right as Brendon's mother pulls up to the curb. Brendon hugs Jon and Ryan one more time, and he scrambles into the car, yelling happily, "We talked about love today, it was awesome," as the door closes.

Greta pats the top of Jon's head. "Feeling better?" she asks.

Jon beams up at her, swinging his and Ryan's clasped hands back and forth. "Yup," he says. "All better." He scrinches his nose a little and adds, "Miss Greta, can love just be your friends?"

She tries not to press a hand to her heart and make embarrassing cooing noises. The boys always glower at her when she does that. "Yes, Jon, I think that's a perfectly good definition of love," she replies, squeezing Jon's shoulder before doing the same to Ryan.
