They meander around the city until sundown, the two of them. Eames reads maybe two pages of his book in the space of three hours, and it doesn’t take Arthur long to figure out that the subjects of Eames' surveillance work are a middle-aged couple. The couple had begun by eating lunch at Arthur's riverside cafe before moving on to go shopping and for a walk to the Pergamon Museum, which is probably more of a distraction for Eames than it is for Arthur because Arthur doesn’t have a hell of a lot of interest in anything that took place before living memory ( ... )

The Haubs lead Eames -- and, consequently, Arthur -- to various tourist attractions, but to be perfectly honest Arthur isn’t paying a hell of a lot of attention to where they're going. He has one eye on his phone for updates from Angela (he now knows that the Haubs have no children but three dogs, a second home in the South of France, and, collectively, four patents pending -- later, whenever he gets time to set his laptop down somewhere more private, he’s going to take a stab at their financial records) and another on Eames’ ass, which for once is wearing something that actually fits. Eames’ pants, typically, are a travesty, especially considering the fact that they cover up an ass which in Arthur’s considered opinion (and hands-on experience) is hot enough to make grown men weep ( ... )

‘Are you telling me you knew the entire time that I was following you?’ He tries for angry, but mainly just ends up with exasperated.

‘Well, I had to make sure you were interested before I said anything,’ says Eames, like it’s the most reasonable thing in the world. ‘You know, I not only had to mail them a gift certificate for your favourite cafe but I also had to make sure they went there at the same time as you? Coincidence is shockingly difficult to orchestrate, it turns out.’ He glances down, smoothing his tie in a false gesture of modesty, and the beginnings of a suspicion begin to sneak up on Arthur.

‘Eames, did you plan all of this?’ He’d known there was something not-quite-right about Eames’ mysterious new affinity for Dunhill and windsor knots ( ... )

Dude, how much do I adore you for using those pics as inspiration. I HAVE VERY STRONG FEELINGS ABOUT THEM OKAY.

Arthur has seen Eames in many and varied disguises, but his favourite will always be Eames with four neat red fingernail grooves pressed into the back of his neck, and Arthur has every intention of putting them there whenever they get back to a room with a door that locks.
