discussion of health issues, possibly triggering?

I've often considered talking about my brother's lack of concern for his health, but I always end up writing a long-winded rant and then deleting it. The gist of it is, he's uber unhealthy about his lifestyle choices; granted, he doesn't smoke or drink or do drugs, but he is super careless when it comes to everything else. ( more )

Ugh, I'm sorry to hear about your brother. When someone refuses to take care of themselves and refuses other's offers of help, it makes things so difficult and stressful for everyone. Hopefully he has a really good doctor and nurses working with him that can make an impression on him just how important it is for him to start making improvements.
Hope you have an awesome & safe trip to Florida, and are able to unwind!

*hugs* One thing to possibly consider is that people who are struggling to keep diabetes under control often have problems with depression because there is a definite connection to be serotonin levels and blood sugar levels, so part of his problems with taking care of himself could be connected to diabetes related depression.

Oh wow, thanks for telling me. He has been struggling (in secret) with depression for a while now; I'm also convinced he knew he had diabetes and just ignored it. He went to the doctor early last year and had blood work done, and there's just no way they didn't tell him he was diabetic. However, he didn't tell us that. Also, he was told he had low testosterone, and he's been taking medication for that. I've heard low testosterone causes depression, too.

not getting enough sleep wouldn't help him much either. my ex-hubby is horribly overweight (he gained a heap of weight after the divorce), and he has sleep apnea issues because of it that was causing him to be exhausted all the time. he had no idea, because he thought he was sleeping okay. am sure the hospital will check for that too if it seems likely with your bro. my ex has a breathing machine so he gets enough air while he sleeps to be able to rest properly.

i hope this stay helps him get a bit of a handle on things. thinking of him and you and your whole family with lots warmth and love ::holds you tight::

hurrah for florida \o/
