MacBeth

Thursday I went to see MacBeth which is being played by Cheek By Jowl at the Barbican. I was looking forward to it a lot, it's a sell out and Cheek By Jowl have a great reputation. Sadly it was not good. In fact it was quite tedious. I've waited a couple of days to write about in case I was being unduly harsh and it softened in my memory.

The very same. It closes soon so I've managed to get my bum in gear and get a ticket. Should be good :)

Oh man! I wanted to go to the local cinema screening of it back in January - and missed out on tickets because it sold out so fast (since it was being shown at a tiny indie cinema not one of the larger chains). *pouts dramatically*

The production I saw at Theatr Clwyd was also very stripped back in terms of set and props, and the costumes were very similar to those in the photo above. The performances, though, were mesmerising and the company really brought the play alive; there was a standing ovation at the end.

It's such a shame when the production of a play fails to engage even one member of an audience, let alone a theatre full. I worry that your experience may have been shared by someone watching that play as a first taste of Shakespeare, in which case they may have been completely put off. So sad.

There were a lot of drama students there taking notes. I hope it doesn't put them off. I should have said the audience was fairly evenly split between those who reacted as I did and those who were whooping and cheering at the curtain call....

If I were part of the company, I'd be concerned about your half of the audience
