Today I got prequalified for a loan for $115k (though I could get $120k if I felt up to it and if the property taxes are low on the house that I finally choose) only because I wanted to keep the payments low

Houses really are the best way to go. Why waste rent money when you could be earning equity?

Good luck with the hunt. And plant many land mines around the perimeter if you're in a not-quite-good neighborhood.
