Our surround sound system just died. It shut itself off and stopped working; there was no obvious cause. We tried it in different outlets to be sure, but no luck

You may both be right. After the new system arrived, we checked to make sure everything worked. Sadly, the DVD player in the new system is broken. We've called Philips again (thankfully to the same quick service), and they're sending us yet another one. If the NEW new one fails, well... we'll see.

back when I was in TV repair, they were the worst to deal with.... Maybe they have turned themselves around?
I mean, their TVs were failing left and right, they wouldn't supply needed parts, and trying to get ahold of them was next to impossible.
