We are stardust, we are golden...

The Leonids are back - Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. For London, the weather forecast is marginal, and we'll have poor viewing of the (very well modelled) peak. It should still be good, though, if clear.

Did you see that news item on the new dark skies park?
I remember sitting one night, high in the Andes, breathing in the sweet, slightly hallucinogenic fumes of the datura tree, looking up at the Milky Way streaming overhead and understanding why the Inca priests were so obsessed with the skies...

The darkest I've ever seen was Kildonan in midwinter; I couldn't recognise constellations, there were too many stars.

OTOH, with a half-decent sky, observing constellations without my glasses on actually showed up the dark ones a little better than normal.
