Whether they were stoned before or during the deed, it seems to me that they certainly are not representative of cannabis consumers. Digging up a corpse, removing the head, and fashioning the skull into a working bong? No, these are not the hoofprints of your normal, godfearing stoner. It's far too savage, too aggressive.
Funny, I thought of it more as a Tantric sort of thing, that using the skull to imbibe represented their awareness of death and desire to transgress the illusionary boundaries of maya that we all create in our daily sober lives. But that's just me...
