Once his crew had their jobs for this trip and headed off, Mal took the time to collect all the cash he had saved, and then picked up a couple of trinkets he had been saving for trade. He packed them up, pulled on his leather jacket and headed off Serenity

River had been sitting on the floor talking to a man in a brown coat. When Mal arrives, she jumps up, leaving her companion without comment.

She helps him unpack things, smiling gently as she lets her left hand brush against his for a moment. Casual contact to any witness, but for that instant the rings are beside each other.

He didn't even notice them when he walked in, but then again, River always knew how to hide in plain sight. He smiles back at her as she helps, not saying anything, or needing to say anything.

Finally, he points to a box. "That one's yours," he says softly.

Just the excuse she needs to throw her arms around Mal's shoulders and kiss him... She's not used to it being allowed yet... "Do I get to open it now, or wait?"

"Whenever you'd like, baobei," he says, arms going around her. He kisses her once again for good measure.
