Black slacks, crisp white shirt...gun holster. Yep, he was ready to go out. His slightly dishevelled hair, his black boots - which he hadn't worn in a dog's age - were a bit scuffed, and his leather jacket in place of his normal brown one took away from the image, but that was okay. The place they were going to was nice, but not that nice.
It had dancing, which would be fun. At least River would enjoy it. Speaking of which, it was time he went to meet her in the cargo. He ignored the stares from the others as he made his way through the ship. Didn't rightfully care what they thought anyhow. He sure as hell didn't remember any of it when he laid eyes on her, as she stood waiting for him in the dress and shoes and...
His heart skipped in an unfamiliar way and he had half a mind to go fetch Simon and demand a medical check-up. It was a long moment before his lungs remembered how to breathe, and his mouth how to speak.
"You look lovely, Miss....iz Reynolds," he stammered softly, bowing slightly. He hadn't been sure what to call her, and had the crew been present - noisily present, as he was sure they were watching anyhow - he would have loudly addressed her as Miss Tam. But since they were polite enough to keep silent, he too kept the proceedings private and for River's ears only. "Truly, you are a vision."
He smiled at the pretty blush that formed on her cheeks at the greeting, and he could see the restraint she was exercising in her eyes; if she pounced him now, for that one admission, they would never make it to dinner and the crew would have a show. So, arms linked, they headed out into the night.
Dinner went smooth, or at least, as smooth as anything Malcolm Reynolds planned ever went. Of course, his lady-love, the enforcer that she was, managed to avert trouble before it began. There was no power in the 'verse that was going to keep her from dancing with Mal, that much was certain. The glided over the dance floor, Mal leading when he knew the steps, River tricking him into leading when he didn't.
It was sad when the night had to end, and the only way Mal could get River to go back home with him was to promise that they could dance all night in his room.
It didn't take long for the dancing to turn into barefoot-dancing, which turned into partially undressed dancing. The partially undressed became naked and then the two were falling onto the bed in a tangle of limbs.
It was a long time before they finally fell asleep, sated for the time being. Tomorrow was another day, but tonight would linger for a while longer.
