Not again

Turlough rubbed his temples and stood unsteadily, wondering why he felt so bad. He'd made an appearance at the embassy do, as his brother had requested but he had carried a single glass of the local vintage around sipping at it for show. He much preferred to have his head about him during these functions ( Read more... )

Jack stood in one of the large open spaces he'd found. He hunched forward over a computer screen, trying to prise from it any information he could. When he was, why he was and furthermore what the hell was going on.

Annoyingly to this point the only things he found made little sense at all.

He glanced up as he saw a figure enter the room. His gun was within reach.

"And who might you be?"

Turlough leaned insouciantly against the door frame with his arms crossed. "I might ask you the same question. Where are we and why did you bring me here?"

It crossed his mind that this other man might also be a prisoner here but given the circumstances he felt justified in adding "I trust that gun over there is just for show. It's rather tedious and off-putting." He gave the other man his best 'you bore me' look, honed over years of official functions he hadn't been able to avoid.

He didn't especially want to be back in the sort of life where guns were pointed at him on a regular basis. He'd thought he'd left that behind when he'd chosen to return to Trion rather than continuing to travel with the Doctor.

Jack gave the man an incredulous look.

"Don't flatter yourself," he said, looking back to the screen in front of him. "I've got no idea who you are and trust me, even if I had? I wouldn't be bringing you anywhere."

The system made no sense! How could they possibly be on Bowie Base One?! How? Could they be in 2059? None of it made sense.

He dutifully ignored the comment on his gun. He didn't answer to anyone.

"Where've you come from?" he shouted up over at the man. "Before you got here?"

Turlough sighed and wished he were back on Trion having a light breakfast and reading the morning news. "Well I've no idea who you are either, and I'm not the one with the weapon, so excuse me for being wary," he snapped back irritably.

He fidgeted with his cuffs for a moment. It felt odd to be back in Earth clothes after so long, but it had somehow become a symbol of support for the former exiles and he'd felt obliged to dress the part. Falling asleep in it had not been part of the plan.

In the end, he saw no harm in answering the man's question. "Trion. And you?" He moved closer to the other man, peering at the screen above his shoulder. "More importantly where are we?" Bowie Base One had told him nothing and experience had taught him that knowledge was his best tool for whatever lay ahead.

"TURLOUGH!"

The Doctor's voice bellowed down the hallway. There was a face he hadn't expected (and ought not) see again. This place was getting odder by the moment.

He ran about halfway down the hall, then added: "DUCK!"

Turlough had no clue how the strange man knew his name, but experience had taught him that when people yelled DUCK, you ducked. He threw himself into a corner, hiding behind an upturned bit of metal shelving and waited for the all clear.

The Doctor, who had been having a go at Turlough, laughed as the man curled into a corner. He walked the rest of the way down the hall and held his hand out.

"Fantastic. Always wanted to do that. I was much too polite, though." He wiggled his hand a little. "Come on, get up then. Things to do, Mars to find out about."

Turlough glared and brushed the stranger's hand aside, privately resolving to get his own back at some as yet undetermined point in the future, provided that there was an opportunity to do so.

"And who might you be?" he asked the man icily as he stood up again with as much dignity as he could manage, given the circumstances.
