Chapter 3

“Ok, you have to ‘fess up. What is up with you and that blind kid, Blaine?” Mercedes zeroed in on Kurt without preamble, when Monday came. Kurt, Mercedes, and Tina were having lunch at their usual table in the cafeteria
Kurt had been grilled by both Mercedes and Tina countless times over the last few days. They had been relentless, and Kurt tried to deflect as much as he can, but this was starting to get exasperating. He took his time, moving his food about on his plate before answering, because he really didn’t want to.

“For the last time Mercedes, Blaine and I are just friends.”

“Friends don’t call each other 24/7, and you’re always Blaine this and Blaine that,” Tina challenged.

“Ohmygod, what do you guys want from me? I was with you all Sunday, wasn’t I? It’s not like I’ve cut back on our time together.”

“Yeah, but you were on the phone with him constantly.”

“We’re not jealous of your ‘friendship’ or anything. We just want to know what’s up. Friends should share stuff about each other.”

These two really were persistent.

“Riight. And you’re interest in my affairs has nothing to do with the fact that my friendship with Blaine just might have the tiniest potential for gossip fodder?”

Mercedes and Tina looked at each other, before protesting, which was a sign of guilt really. Kurt shook his head. “Look, the novelty of newfound friendship will wear off eventually and I will stop talking about him.”

If he was being honest to himself, he really wanted to tell his best friends about his feelings for Blaine but he felt had to downplay it as much as he can. It was bad enough that he just recently admitted to himself his strong feelings for the boy. He just didn’t want this to crash and burn like his previous unrequited crushes. He had no doubt that if this were to do so, he’d be more than devastated. This was not new to him, falling for a boy who absolutely had no clue about his affections or didn’t reciprocate them. But in some ways this was something different altogether. With the others (He laughed inwardly at this, his mind made it sound like some grand heartbreak, when there was only Finn and Sam, really.), his feelings constituted mostly of what-ifs and fairy-tale-like fantasies. But with Blaine, there was the barest hint of possibility. They were already spending so much more time than what he considered typical of a platonic male friendship, (typical for him at least. His only male friends were the guys at the glee club, and they weren’t even that close.) Blaine wasn’t helping matters himself. The boy just brightened up whenever Kurt was around. Kurt enjoyed watching Blaine’s hazel eyes widen and his smile slowly spreading across his face whenever he felt Kurt was near.

There was also the matter of Kurt’s own reactions. Where there used to be usual butterflies fluttering in his stomach at the sight of a crush approaching, with Blaine there was more, his stomach not just fluttered, at times it clenched almost painfully, even at the mere thought of the boy. His blushes didn’t just touch the apples of his cheek anymore, the warmth spread all over his body all the way to his toes. Yet, despite all these uncomfortable feelings, he also felt comfort in the other boy’s company. This was what scared Kurt the most: the comfort, the laughing, the feeling nice. He didn’t want it shattered. He’d rather have this perpetual pain in his stomach than give that up.

*****
Kurt had fallen into the habit of accompanying Blaine home on days when Santana and Brittany had Cheerio practice. He knew there was no real need, as Blaine was more than capable of going home on his own when all three had Glee practice. He was nevertheless glad that Brittany thought up this great idea that he should. They were on their way out the school’s door, when Kurt suddenly remembered that he left a book on his locker that he needed for that night’s schoolwork.

They were walking back to the hall where Kurt’s locker was when they heard boisterous laughter as they neared the area. Sure enough, Kurt saw Azimio and Dave standing by his locker, a can of spray paint in hand. Both jocks had just painted the word “F*G” on it.

“Stay here…” Kurt whispered to Blaine and moved towards the locker, but Blaine’s hand stopped him. “Hey, I’m going with you.”

Kurt was apprehensive but thought that they couldn’t possibly do anything to Blaine and if there were any abuse to his own person, Blaine wouldn’t see it. So he continued toward his locker as calmly as he could and tried to stamp down the growing fear and anxiety inside him.

As soon as the two bullies saw him, he was immediately pinned against the lockers. Though, thankfully Blaine was left untouched at the side.

“You breathe a word about this to anyone, we’ll kill you,” Dave whispered menacingly. Kurt had no choice but to nod vigorously in assent.

“What, no big words this time, Hummel?” Azimio taunted. “Not so brave now with your loser club around, are you?”

“Please, just let me go…” Kurt whimpered.

“Let him go!” Blaine shouted, all the while helplessly waving his cane in front of him. The two jocks turned to him, they had momentarily forgotten he was there.

“What’s this? You spreading your fairy dust, lady boy?” Dave said shoving him again for emphasis. “You better not infect other kids with your gay.”

“Yeah, that’s right.” Azimio nodded. “We’re watching you. You’re lucky we don’t pick on the disabled.”

Kurt crumpled to the floor as soon as the two boys left. He couldn’t say a word, and just allowed silent tears fall down his face, as he turned to look at Blaine who was feeling his way towards him.

“Kurt, are you ok?”Blaine asked, his worry etched on his face. When he finally felt Kurt sitting on the floor, he crouched down and touched the crying boy’s shoulder. He could feel Kurt’s shaky in-drawn breath and guessed that the boy had been crying. “I’m so sorry, Kurt, I never knew you had it this bad,” he said brokenly, his throat aching with emotion. He could also feel his eyes burn with tears that are threatening to fall. “And I couldn’t even do anything about it even if I wanted to. I’m so sorry…”

“It’s really not your fault.” Kurt whispered quietly as he gathered his things and tried to get up, holding Blaine. “It’s my problem, not yours.”

Blaine didn’t know what to say to this, so he tried to comfort Kurt in another way, by enveloping him in a tight embrace. Kurt, however, stiffened and tried to disentangle himself. “We really shouldn’t. They might come back.”

Blaine slowly nodded and ducked his head because he was already tearing up, and he didn’t want Kurt to see. He didn’t want Kurt to think that he pitied him. It might alienate the boy even more. “Can I hold your hand, at least?” and he felt Kurt’s soft palm against his in silent answer.
