They grew up in an orphanage as the successors of L. There is also "Ryuzaki" around, something like a double of L.
Mello and Near a rivals in a way, even though they care for each other quite a lot. Mello and Matt are friends, the same goes for Matt and Near, even if they argue the whole time.
Matt is pretty fond of Mello, but it seems that Mello canceled his partnership with Matt.
