It was a morning lullaby. The crash of the waves and the muffled sounds of laughter came together like a symphony, making it easy for Maki to be lulled into a light slumber. The rays of the sun warmed her bare skin that wasn’t covered by her deep red bikini like a blanket. Maki told others that she could sleep anywhere, but when she wasn’t in her bed her favorite place to fall asleep at was the beach.
She allowed her feet that wasn't resting on top of the towel to sink into the warm sand. It was almost therapeutic.
A soft pattering of footsteps came in her direction and she froze, wondering if anyone could recognize her with the round sunglasses and oversized sunhat on her head. A shadow was cast over her body as the figure stilled in front of her.
Maki felt drops of water fall onto her blanket and opened her eyes when one of them fell on her cheek. The figure stood in front of the sun, and was shadowed by it.
“Are you still sleeping?” he asked, Maki instantly relaxing at the familiar voice.
“I’m tired,” she groaned, resting on her elbows and pushing herself up. “Are you done splashing around in the water?”
“I wasn’t splashing around,” the figure took a step forward and slowly straddled her on the blanket.
“Toma! You’re wet!” Maki whined as she looked up at his wide grin.
“Now you are too,” he slowly adjusted himself so he wasn’t crushing her but Maki couldn’t help at glare at him. His black swimming trunks were dripping all over her dry torso, blanket and the book resting at her side.
“You’re getting water on my book,” Maki tried once more, squirming a bit underneath him. She tried to ignore the warmth pooling in her stomach because the two of them were barely clothed. She tried to rip her gaze away from his tan, wet chest.
“People aren’t supposed to read on the beach,” he complained, running his finger down her neck. Maki shivered at the contact, his skin still cool from the water.
“What are they supposed to do on a beach?” she challenged, lifting her hips off of the towel and smirking when she saw the blush spreading over his face.
“Now now Maki, don’t fool around with me in public. You know in the end you’re going to be the one who’s embarrassed,” he smirked back at her, grinding his hips down. His smirk spread into a grin when she hissed and threw her head to the side. “Let’s go swimming.”
“I don’t want to get wet,” she attempted to sit up once more only to be held down by him.
Toma bit his lip tightly to force himself not to make a dirty joke. She always hated those. Instead he dipped his hand into the sand beside them and grabbed a handful of it, taking off her hat with the other one. He laughed at her confused gaze before holding the handful of sand above her head. “I said, let’s go swimming.”
“Don’t you dare,” her jaw dropped as she watched several grains of sand slip through his fingers. She didn’t care if a small, unnoticeable amount went into her hair but not a whole handful. She couldn’t take a taxi back and leave behind a trail of sand, it would be embarrassing. His grin only widened as he allowed a steady flow of sand to fall from his hand and onto her hair. “Why did you do that?”
“Now you have to take a dip with me,” he leaned down slightly to press his lips against the corner of her mouth. She forced herself not to smile at the taste of salt because overall, she was still slightly annoyed. “Come on, it’ll be fun.”
“I’ll go. But only to drown you,” she said darkly, earning only a deep chuckle as he slowly stood up and held his hand out to help her up as well. Holding hands with their fingers intertwined, the couple walked past the giggling children building sandcastles and playing frisbee.
Maki experimentally placed her foot into the waves crashing against the shore. The water was slightly chilled but she knew better than to take baby steps. Grinning competitively beside her at Toma, she sprinted into the water causing large amounts of splashing to follow her.
Toma only laughed to himself before following her path, wrapping his arms around her waist and slowly turning her around. “You’re shivering,” he stated, pulling her tighter.
“I was warm on the sand,” she rolled her eyes underneath her sunglasses, which miraculously remained on her face. The two of them slowly floated off towards the deeper end of the water, where less children played and few adults swam in.
“You look really hot in that bikini,” Toma winked at her, causing Maki to roll her eyes and automatically dunk him into the water.
She giggled as he squirmed underneath her hold, before leaping up and gasping for air. “Told you I would drown you,” she pointed out, attempting to dunk him again.
His hand clasped around her wrist and she was dragged under with him. Maki inwardly frowned when she realized that her hair would smell like the seawater for the rest of the day until she took a shower. With her eyes squeezed shut and the noises of the shore muffled, Maki could only feel. She felt the seaweed tangle itself around her feet. She felt the waves pushing and pulling her in opposite directions. She felt Toma’s lips on her neck and his fingertips grazing the tie at the back of her bikini.
Maki kicked up and took a deep gulp of air while glaring at the figure beside her doing the same. “What are you trying to do?”
Toma shrugged sheepishly and she muttered ‘pervert’ under her breath. “Wouldn’t it be fun though? In the water?”
“There’s kids around. Not romantic at all,” Maki pointed out, before wrapping her arms around his shoulders and her legs around his waist. She blinked against the sunlight and his beaming grin when she realized she lost her sunglasses.
“But-”
“There is no way I’m skinny dipping right now,” she finalized, combing her fingers through his hair and tightening her legs around him. He was definitely a bit too thin for Maki’s liking, but she loved the warmth their skin contact produced in the chilled water.
Toma only pouted.
“Tonight when there is no one here is an entirely different story,” Maki gave him a reassuring smile before fusing her mouth onto his.
Perhaps the beach had it’s lullabies in the morning. But neither of them were going to sleep that night.
