I don't know how many of you have heard about the Orphan Works bill, but its going up in congress soon- Basically its proposing that if the creator of an image is impossible to locate, their artwork is up for grabs. And to keep copyrights on your images, you're going to have to register them all. This is bad ( Read more... )

from what I understand the second part of that statement isn't anywhere in any proposed legislation. Nothing has been put to either floor of congress, nor has anyone seriously considered this idea. The pure BASIS of copyright law is that as soon as an original work is created, it becomes copyrighted.

no- that is part of it.
Finally, S. 2913 directs the Register of Copyrights to begin a certification process for the establishment of an electronic database to facilitate the search for pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works that are subject to copyright protection.

what concerns me is that advertising agencies have bots that search the internet and download massive amounts of images and then use whatever ones are useful and steal ideas and such- what is concerning about this, mostly, is that big advertising companies and places will start doing these searches and have all these images that are ripped from sites and then they "can't find the artist"- ie this makes it easier to steal images and use them, which makes it harder for illustrators to find work. and photographers and artists etc.
and if we all have to register our images in a copyright bank- if someone gets it before the artist puts a copyright on it, youre screwed.
