Earn? Okay, then. If I don't know you, you haven't earned my respect, and therefore I can treat you like dirt. Right? Wrong. That's how self-righteous jerks think.
See, respect is something that every person is entitled to, from every other person. If a person disrespects another, his or her entitlement to respect from others is lost for a contextually appropriate amount of time. I call this concept Common Decency.
I don't care if person A is the CEO of some megacorporation, and person B is an unemployed janitor: person A still must respect person B, just as much as person B must respect person A.
Basically, if I respect you, I should be able to reasonably expect that you will respect me. If you don't respect me, I don't need to respect you.
So first of all, you obviously don't respect me, since you called me a self-righteous jerk. secondly, you instictively respect people who earn it, by behaving in respectable ways: being a good listener, being polite, being kind, doing ones job well, being aged etc. true, there is baseline respect that social conventions place on us, but the respect that is earned from those qualities is far superior to the flimsy respect demanded by social conventions. respect, like freedom, is a thing that if given, can be taken away. If taken (in this case by earning it), it can never be lost.
