Set between A Disquiet Follows My Soul and The Oath.

Her lassitude worried him, but it carried a silver lining: the energy she was not expending as president she was hoarding for him. He was still functioning, someone had to, but whatever strength he had left after the fleet, the pills, the booze was hers.

They were both old, tired, sick. Her quicksilver laugh was slower in coming than it used to be; his silver tongue could no longer command the way it once did. But in their bed, at night, it did not matter. She rose over him, her skin silver in the soft light, his worshipful hands golden.
