ar_drabbles challenge #60, "Hero".
"You are so stoned."
"Look who's talking. Want another?"
"We have another we're gonna stay here all night, Laura."
"Live a little, Bill. When's the last time you spent the night out under the stars?"
"Kobol."
"Kobol?" Laura propped herself up on her elbow, laughing. "You could see stars through all that rain?"
He pushed her hair behind her ear. Her eyes glowed like stars. "You are so beautiful when you're happy."
"And you're so sad."
"When you're beautiful?"
"All the time. Why are you so sad, Bill?"
"I'm not."
"You are."
"I'm not now."
"You are. Underneath the happy, you're sad."
He sat up, busied himself with preparing them another joint. "It hasn't been a happy life."
"Your divorce?"
"Best thing that ever happened to me."
"I know the feeling. Your son?"
"Losing a child is like nothing else. It changes you."
"And that's what made you so sad?"
He took a long pull off the joint and passed it to her. He waited until he couldn't hold the smoke in any longer, then exhaled it on a "No."
"So what's got you so sad, Bill?"
So many things, a life of sad he could overcome, but -- "Ever feel you've done something so wrong you can't even beg for forgiveness?" Bulldog -- every day the fleet was a reminder of what he had done. Every day they survived was a drop of the payback he owed them.
Stealing Hera, and using one of Bill's own officers to do so. He'd never forgive her. "I've got no clue what you're talking about. Come on, lie down. It's almost morning. Wait till you see the sunrise. The light is almost heavenly. It's like the gods themselves are forgiving us."
But would you forgive me, Laura?
But would you forgive me, Bill?
