For ar_drabbles challenge 79, photograph. In the sure and certain hope that in a few weeks both the holiday and the Downton Abbey seasons will be over and I can return to normal commenting.
Set during Six of One.

The paper shortage was critical, and photo stock needed for operations.

But her papers were here; she'd be back. It was bad enough he'd let her be at risk. That he'd gotten drunk was worse. The things he'd said to her were terrible, that she'd moved out almost unbearable. The thought that she'd come back in the morning and see the debris of the day broke him. She deserved so much better than him.

He could put away the bottle, wash the glass, tuck her hair away. But their picture, shattered, the two of them standing divided, would remind her why all of this was a bad idea. She had lived without love, she could die that way. It would be no less than she'd expected and so much less than she deserved.

He searched through his drawers and files. Somewhere here, he thought, he had the negative. He would get a new copy printed, find new glass. Worst came to worst he had his old wedding picture. Carolanne wouldn't mind. (She would. He shouldn't care.)

Laura had shot through their picture, he'd shot through their life. If he could repair one, maybe there would be hope for the other.
