I tend to dislike reading and writing first person too, but sometimes it is still awesome. You like fantasy, right? (It's been so bloody long, but I do recall that you were a Buffy fan.) Try Sarah Monette's Melusine, The Virtu, and The Mirador. Beyond awesome. The author has a Ph.D. in English Literature so you can imagine that it is quality writing. Crazy twisted writing that abuses the characters but remains addictive out of sheer quality of writing.
I'll look into it at our little used book store, or mayhaps even the *gasp* library.
I'm clearly desperate for something to read, five of the last six things I've read were Stephanie Meyer, and the other was Eragon (Paolini's style is the bad end of third person).
Nearly done. I'm limiting myself to only reading it when I sit in the van waiting for children.
It's slightly better than I remember, but I've read a couple of different dissections of it, not to mention its companion (Midnight Sun) which is the same story with a different POV, so there's things I'm finding amusing in odd places.
I don't mind reading first person if it's done well. (It can be. Holly Black springs to mind.) But I prefer third person. I've tried writing in first person and it was a little uncomfortable. Hated the amount of 'I' 's needed to write in that style. (My God.) Apart from that I think it's a good tool for getting into the characters mindset.
