Sorry for the image. It feels true, though.

I'm thankful that we've had a very wet year in Arizona, so that I saw a completely different desert when I took my guests to the Desert Botanical Gardens today. The saguaros were positively FAT! The ocotillo that usually looks dead (but isn't) was garnished in tiny green leaves all up and down its spiny ( Read more... )

That sounds like a very full, very good day. Hooray for being done with grading! Having helped out with the moot court briefs for law school, and knowing how bad some of those are, I can only imagine.

Sometimes I also think that writing is very recent, evolutionarily speaking, and that most people's brains aren't built to edit their words very carefully... ;)

The ocotillo is my favorite plant in all the world. Every year it, as you say, "looks dead" and then comes to life with beautiful leaves and bright flowers. I like its weird cousin the Boojum tree, too.

Aw, you're welcome! You know, I saw a booklet on writing essays on movies over at Half-Price Books, and I almost picked it up for your students. I don't suppose it would help, though.

I would love to get over to the Phoenix Zoo, World Wildlife Zoo, and the Desert Botanical Gardens before it gets too hot. Fun and good exercise, both!
