whistle while you work, so hard, all day

Oh, I knew the answer before you said it! Yay me!

Do you think students take film classes because they think it's an easy class, and then they don't try? Because I don't understand how you can miss that question otherwise.

Yay you!

I think that's definitely true for some of them. I had a student whine to me about grades, and then it turned out that he hadn't bought the textbook. He said he couldn't afford it. I told him that I couldn't afford books during college either, but that's why I went to the LIBRARY to use the RESERVE copy.

My school is also a well-known party school. The reputation is deserved -- I have had students come to my classes with hangovers more than once.

Grades are always more impressive in bold-tip!

Definitely!

I want to write some of these grades in horror-film-style red paint.

Well... I guess screwball could be applied to mockumentary... but mockumentary is still the key word.

"true story" makes me think the student doesn't know what "parody" means.

It's a very long stretch -- most screwball comedies are not mockumentaries, and most mockumentaries are not screwball comedies. Moreover, "screwball" is not the same thing as "screwball comedy."

(Sorry, the teacher in me won't calm down until final grades are in)

I know that these students were just filling in anything in a desperate bid not to leave things blank, but true story really does show an inconceivable level of ignorance.

Hee! That's ok. So give me an example of something that's screwball, but not a screwball comedy. I believe that such an animal exists, but I'm having a hard time thinking of one.

Yeah, and I'd guess mockumentary even though I haven't taken the class... unless I second guessed myself out of it.

This is a technicality, but a screwball is a kind of pitch in baseball. It can also be slang for a crazy person. In usage, one might say to a friend, "Let's go see a screwball comedy," but it sounds strange to my ears to say, "Let's go see a screwball" or "Let's rent a screwball tonight."

Of course, if the correct answer to the question had been "screwball comedy," I would have given the student full credit for writing "screwball." But the name of the genre remains "screwball comedy."

I couldn't guess mockumentary in a million years! Then again, I didn't know that Northern Ireland is part of Ireland until 6 months ago, when I thought about taking vacation there I think that proves that I can be very stupid, despite being thought of as generally smart.

I love their answers! Wish documentary, inspirational narrative, science fiction, and true story! It make me laugh for a full two minutes in my little office.

You're not stupid, you're just focused ;)

Yeah, those answers made me laugh, too -- but then they made me weep, because these were MY students.

My lack of general knowledge was confirmed when Z answered the question correctly right off the bat. He didn't even wait a second and said "mockumentary", and he graduated from a school of very focussed people (they hold an "intergration bee" where they throw integrals at you, much like a "spelling bee" to more normal youngsters).

I really lack focus right now, should really get back to work....
