Long Day
Went to my friend's dad's funeral today. He had untreatable cancer so it wasn't sudden or anything, but it was still sad.
It was a Humanist Service rather than a Religious one, which was different...
The service itself was short and there was no singing of any hymns or that but he did have a CD of his favourite songs (don't think I'll be able to listen to Status Quo in quite the same way.)
The minister (not too sure if she would be called a minister? A Humanist Minister?) talked about his life, how he met my friend's mum, interests, how he was in the army, etc. It was bizarre because I've known the whole family for a while now and I learned all this stuff that I hadn't known. I also discovered he was the same age as my mum, which kind of freaked me out, and made me give both my parents hugs when I went to see them after the service.
There was also a Black Watch Piper (that was his regiment when he was in the army) playing bagpipes, which I thought was a lovely tribute to the time he spent in the armed forces.
We went to a posh Hotel for the wake and my friends and I (and her younger sister and her friends) just laughed remembering her dad and what he was like. I think that Mr Hartley would like to have been remembered with laughter rather than tears.
All in all it was a long day.
