My third cousin twice removed:

• Enlists with the Royal Field Artillery on 8th January 1906
• Goes out to fight in WW1 on 16th August 1914, just 19 days after war is declared
• Is officially declared missing in action on 29th August 1914
• At some point in 1915 is found to be an internee at a Prisoner of War camp in Münster
• Is released from internment on 10th

I suppose you're right. I have a bias that joining the army is normally equated with committing suicide.
