Not an articulate review or anything, just a few thoughts about the finale...
I watched Victory this morning… If I let myself think about it, I'll start crying again, hours later.
What an amazing episode. It was the perfect finale. Epic, amazingly written, emotional, and sad/tragic, as expected… but also permeated by a sense of hope and, yes, victory. Because in the end Spartacus’ cause/mission/ideal won, it inspired and will inspire many people, and it’s still inspiring people today.
It was extremely hard to watch Spartacus, Gannicus, Naevia, Saxa, Lugo, Kore, and everyone else die, but they all went down like heroes and free men and women, just like they wanted.
I feel awful for what they did to Gannicus (historically he died on the battlefield, he wasn't among the rebels that were crucified), but in the end I'm ok with it because it's symbolic of his "redemption", and I freaking loved that in his last scene he sees Oenomaus and he imagines to be in the arena, with the crowd cheering for him. Like the rockstar he is!
I'm not crazy about Sybil, but I guess Gannicus needed her in order to win some of his demons.
Sparty's speeches were wonderful, and I just love him. I was hoping DeKnight would have spared him, given that the body of the historical Spartacus was never found... but as he said in an interview I read, it didn't feel right. And I agree....There was only one possible ending for Spartacus, however sad. May you rest in peace in the afterlife with your lovely wife, Sparty. As Agron said, you will never be forgotten!
NAGRON LIVED! I’m grateful for that. And also Laeta and Sybil. I’d like to think Laeta and Sybil are pregnant and will give birth to baby Sparty and baby Ganny (wishful thinking, and fanfic-material…. but hey, I need some positivity!).
The Romans... Crassus's "victory" was very hollow... Spartacus beat him in their showdown; he lost his son and Kore, and Pompey took away the credit for defeating the rebels. Sucks to be you, Crassus. Poor Kore. Sucks to be her too. I have nothing to say about Caesar....if they really do the spinoff about him, I'm not sure I'm really interested...
Impressive performance by Liam, and everyone else. And the final credits paying homage to every character that has played a significant role in the show was a lovely touch, and Andy’s “I am Spartacus” as the last frame ever was fitting and meaningful.
Gratitude DeKnight, Andy, Liam, and everyone involved for giving us this amazing show, one of my favourite shows ever. I’m going to miss it so much, and it’s going to be so weird not having more Spartacus to look forward to.
