I attended high school in the 80s. During that time, industrial action meant that teachers "worked to rule", providing little that was outside their contracts. I still had flute lessons, a trip to France, a choir trip to Italy and Germany (even though I cannot singflu an optional writing class with Alisdair Gray, and a variety of competitive sports which I loathed. Most of the teaching staff had degrees in the subjects they taught, including PhDs.

Very valuably, it was a state school with a catchment area that spanned most of the socioeconomic spectrum.
