Every time I've been around camera equipment in stores, right next to the memory cards/film section (or both) they sell little foil-looking bags to protect aforementioned picture-holding items. Wayback when all we could capture on was film, scanners fucked them up all the time so some genius created these bags to protect film from them (the bags are somewhat see-through so security guys can see what they are, but when they pass through the machines the rays don't penetrate the bag and cause mass photo fuckery). When we went digital someone theorized our computer components could get just as fucked up by the scanners, so the bags were adapted to protect them too.

So what all that means is that it IS known to happen, but it's seemingly random. As you know from your experience (okay on the honeymoon, bad for Belgium...fucking Europe).
