It happens; you can't be the sounding board for everyone's emotional problems without being affected. *hugs you*

I find that I can only deal with three peoples problems at one time. After that I get like you describe, weepy and hand shakey. These people's problems are truly difficult beyond the norm and have no answer. There is no cure for huntingtons or Alzheimers so you don't have an answer for them or a way to help beyond the paliative. If you take it to heart and if you care about the person how can you not, this is very very hard.

Why did I feel so distraught yesterday?
Because you are a compassionate human, but you can only bear so much without tears spilling over. It's nature's safety valve, but you should also regard it as a notice to take care of yourself. You want to help everyone but you can't necesarily do it without weighing yourself down. Find yourself a place or time that's all about donwtime - no heavy thoughts, no distraught phone calls, just you and meditation, or bad TV, or whatever you need to recharge.
