My first week of work...

Was very very tiring. I'm not used to getting up that early anymore and I never liked it even when I was used to it. Plus the subways are crazy with about a million people trying to make it to work all at the same time. Literally, you have to shove yourself onto the train or else you won't get on. I wish I could just drive to work (public ( Read more... )

You have to at least get comp time...they may make it within the pay period, which often can't be done....non profits still have to live by labor laws...and I bet Canada has stronger ones then the US.

are you a salary employee?? cuz if you are, I'm sure in canada they have labor laws, right? you HAVE to get paid overtime, or get comp'd in some kinda way!
I work for a corporate company, so I'm not sure how different non-profits are...but I don't put up with ANY of that shit. If I'm working that hard for THAT many days in a row, I'm getting comp'd. If you wanted to work for free, you could have volunteered somewhere.
If I were you, I'd flat out ask up front..otherwise you're looking to possibly getting screwed in the end, if what your co-workers say is true about NOT getting over time. I'd ask your ED, just to clear up now and for peace of mind.

Hey muffin. I am sorry to hear that this is not going so great. I do think that it is very important that you lay out your boundaries and expectations as soon as you can so that things can be given an immediate opportunity to improve, or you are out of there. You may not get overtime, but you should at least get comp time. But also, yeah, welcome to the world of underfunded non-profits. It is tough stuff. I'm sending lots of love and warm wishes your way. xox to you!

hey babe. i've worked for SEVERAL underfunded nonprofits before. the difference is that they would at least give me a day off if i worked the weekend. so, i just don't understand why these guys don't do the same. it seems to make perfect sense to me. if they can't afford to pay me overtime, then give me a day off. seems fair, right?
