Could be, but I was slightly creepy and morbid before I even knew them. I think it's the other way round, one of the reasons I started loving them was because of all that morbid stuff. The first song I heard was We Both Go Down Together and I instantly thought 'wow, this features rape, suicide and violins. are they always like that?'. Then I listened to more of their records and was amazed that they have songs about young male prostitutes, bidding your children away in a game of high stakes canasta etc. I never would've thought a musician had the guts to write about such things and be humorous about it. And have the name of Russian revolutionaries, heh. Hmm, I think I'm pretty mainstream when it comes to serial killers. The obvious ones like the moors murderers and Fred and Rose West are often the most interesting ones and the ones you know most about. Gimme details, you know? Haha, I'm so gross. I KNOW, RIGHT? WTF, it hasn't really snowed the last two winters and now all of the sudden we have snow storms at Easter?!
We Both Go Down Together was my first Decemberist song too!! Yes there’ll never be enough praise for the awesomeness of Colin’s lyrics! He really sing about anything. I love the ghostly nautical theme they've got. I've tested a few people with the Mariner's Revenge Song. If they don’t appreciate it they loose a million friendship points :p
Yeah what really fascinates/freaks the daylights out of me are the co-dependency cases. The idea that two incredibly disturbed individuals can find each is insane.
Really? That's great, it's such a supreme song. Doesn't ever get old either, does it? Mariner's Revenge is very awesome, however imho it doesn't really represent them. Well, it does represent the funny side of them, yeah, but the creepiest nautical song is hands down Shanty For The Arethusa. I once played it to my friend on headphones and she was freaked out by the time we got to the 'so, goodnight boys, goodnight' part. Creeped out in a good way though, she loves them now ;) I think it's a lot do with influence, most of the time it seems that if they hadn't found each other the merders might not have happened at all.
